Full Size Jeeps: Service and Terrain Ready

Jeep TruckAn FSJ (full size Jeep) is a series of Jeep models that carry the Jeep nameplate and maintain a specific wheelbase. The Jeep J-series trucks were examples of Jeep’s full size line of utility vehicles. It was a foundation that worked well in civilian life and was brought back into service with the design and manufacture of the Kaiser Jeep M715 military trucks from 1967-1969.

Civilians were able to purchase Gladiator models of a durable full size truck chassis and by utilizing that foundation in a military production, Army Jeeps would include a full size truck for combat and service roles.

  • Cavalry transport - M715
  • Taxi - M724
  • Ambulance – M725
  • Utility – M726

The civilian Gladiator truck was a full size Jeep that started its production run in 1963, four years prior to the introduction of the Kaiser M715. Jeep produced “J-series” trucks that were built until 1987. One thing every Jeep offered was durable transportation under any condition. That earned Jeep its military status as well as the cross-over rolls Jeep trucks played for over 30-years in the national carpool of the United States.

Army Jeeps became Army trucks from World War II to the Vietnam War. By 1977 the United States government had over 50,000 Jeep vehicles in use for military and civilian service roles. The national park service was using Jeep trucks exclusively in the same way they were once used in combat except the mission had changed. The durable off-road performance of Jeep was now servicing the public in a new way that utilized the best qualities of a vehicle that was made for reliable service and durable parts.

The future of Jeep full size vehicles may lie in the public hands once again. New models have been seen at auto shows since 2003 when Jeep brought a new Scrambler to the NADA (North American Dealers Association) auto show. 2010 saw the J8 Sarge and Nukizer 715 concept Jeeps show up at the Jeep Safari where Jeep brings the best new equipment to Moab, Utah. It appears that the maker is open to offering a new choice of Jeep full size vehicles as long as the public is willing to buy them en mass.

Auto shows can be the best place to see what will be available in the coming months. New models of Jeep full size vehicles can be viewed online from the manufacturer themselves. The opinions of current owners are easy to get as well. There are resources available in most communities and online. Groups of owners come together every month to talk about Army Jeeps, Jeep trucks, and what they do with them. Ask any one of the members of a Full size Jeep truck club what they think about their truck, and they’ll probably spend the next hour informing you on the experience. That can be used when you buy a new Army Jeep, full size Jeep, or concept Jeep that makes it to market in the future.
